Project Overview

This project involved a complete transformation of a residential driveway in Penarth. The existing surface was outdated and required a full excavation. Our team managed the entire process over one week, from removing the old driveway to applying the final anti-slip sealant, resulting in a stunning, durable, and lowmaintenance imprinted concrete driveway that dramatically enhanced the property’s kerb appeal.

The Challenge

The homeowner wanted to replace their old, worn-out driveway with a modern, functional, and aesthetically pleasing surface. The key requirements were durability, minimal maintenance, and a clean, sophisticated look that would complement their home.

The Installation Process

We determined that pattern-imprinted concrete was the ideal solution. Our proven process ensures a high-quality, long-lasting finish every time.

  1. Excavation and Preparation: The project began with the complete excavation of the existing driveway. All spoil and muck were removed from the site using a grab lorry. We then laid and compacted a sub-base of Type One quarry stone to create a solid foundation, ensuring a consistent concrete depth of 100mm. Formwork and shuttering were constructed around the perimeter to retain the concrete.
  2. The Concrete Pour: A specific, fibre-reinforced concrete mix was ordered for the job. This specialised mix includes an over-sanded composition with 10-14mm aggregate, providing toughness and flexibility. An air-entraining agent is also added to disperse micro-bubbles, creating a stronger, more solid slab. Depending on access, the concrete is dispatched using barrows or a pump and is expertly levelled and trowelled.
  3. Colour and Texture Application: Once the concrete was firm enough, the first layer of colour was applied. For this Penarth project, a Steel Grey Colour Surface Hardener was hand-applied to the entire surface. This was left to absorb moisture before being meticulously trowelled in, creating a smooth, coloured slab.
  4. Imprinting the Pattern: When the concrete reached the perfect consistency, a Charcoal Antique Release Powder was brushed evenly over the surface. This powder serves two purposes: it prevents the large, flexible pattern mats from sticking to the concrete, and it imparts a natural, two-tone, authentic look that replicates real stone. The chosen Ashlar pattern mats were then pressed into the surface to create the final design.
  5. Curing and Finishing: The driveway was left to cure for at least 24 hours. Afterwards, the entire surface was cleaned with a jet wash to remove the excess release powder. Strategically placed expansion and contraction joints were cut into the concrete to prevent cracking. Once the surface was completely dry, we applied a high-quality sealant mixed with an anti-slip additive, protecting the driveway from the elements and ensuring a safe finish.

The Results

The Penarth property now boasts a beautiful and highly functional driveway. The combination of the classic Ashlar pattern with the modern Steel Grey and charcoal accents creates a sophisticated and timeless look. The solid, sealed surface is completely weed-free, stain-resistant, and built to last for decades with minimal maintenance. The homeowner was delighted with the finished product, which exceeded their expectations for both quality and appearance.
